Hey guys,

Myself and a relative would like to piece together a family tree (just for fun), and I am looking for a good place to do it.

I need to have it be:

-online

-sharable and collaborative

Any ideas?

  1. Alternate view-

there are a number of sites that will do what you are looking for.

That does NOT MEAN that it is a good idea to go that route. If you are doing good research... it is more reliable that any data base remains with ONE PERSON.  If not, I can just about guarantee, you will run into issues of who edited what, is this fact accurate, or not... etc.

The other concern is that if your records are only online.. you run the concern of websites that are discontinued, or otherwise become inaccessible. Or, they are trying to reinvent the wheel, and not compatible with standard programs.

PAF is a free program.. it downloads to your system. You maintain the records OFFLINE, and it still can be uploaded..in a standard format.. IF you decide to do that. The fact that it is not stored online, does NOT mean that you cannot share it with others.

Genealogy IS fun.. but it also is important to understand the reasons for doing it correctly. A majority of persons here who are stuck, "I can''t find anything about my ancestor who was born in Virginia" often find out.. that the reason they can't find someone, is BECAUSE they took short cuts.. they relied on "easy" info (maybe online) instead of getting the appropriate records, which wind up proving that the person was actually born in Tennessee.

Here is one guide to finding your ancestry, and rootsweb does offer both a place to upload your research or free webspace.

With all respect... the website that you use, is not what will make your research successful.  Knowing the RECORDS TO USE and where to find those, is the basis.

  2. Go to ancestry.com.  They have a great one that I use, and you can "invite" other family members to contribute.  You can add stories, audio, and photos as well.

    take care, and God bless

  3. MyHeritage.com

this program allows you to invite others to visit your web site plus it also has smartmatches when there is a match to your relatives.

the only problem I've found; you cannot copy the information into your program (?) and I have not found a way to print the drop down screen of the person that is matched, which can contain a lot of information that you have to jot down and then enter it into your website or project.

  4. Genes reunited.

  5. Depends really where you and your family are from . Ancestry.com or ancestry.co.uk have the widest collection for info on UK and US icluding census returns . You can supplement this by using Rootsweb or Family search . Dont forget you can share info and find " lost " relatives by posting your tree ( or what you know ) a variety of sites such as Tribal Pages and ( for UK ) Genes Reunited .
