  2. Looking for any accommodation around Melbourne Cup time is nightmarish.  And you'd better book early.  

    If you're on a budget, then try Nomads.  They have a couple of "pubs" on their books (there's one in South Melbourne and another in Windsor -- for memory); and I believe you can get single accommodation (instead of dormitory) if you prefer.
