  1. Check out Frankenstein Castle (Schloss) near Darmstadt-- it's mostly ruins, but still pretty neat.  (Yes, that's where Mary Shelley got the name.)

  2. There's a Roman Kastell not too far away

    Visit Mainz, a city founded by the Romans (they're excavating a Roman Theatre) and with an - in the medieval age important - cathedral (one of four: the others are Speyer, Worms, and Cologne).
