Looking for appartments near boston....not in boston!?

my husband works in harved med school, which is in longwood, boston, while i work in umass med school, worcester. we have only one car. we are lookign for appartments from where he can conveniently commute and i do not have a long drive.....we are thinking of near riverside station, newton centre, newton and west roxbury. are these safe places? and are they convenient? Any other suggestions for places?
