  1. You might be thinking of Honore de Balzac - famous for his novel cycle, "The Human Comedy".

I would also recommend Guy de Maupassant - not a playwright but a brilliant short story writer - I recommend "The Necklace".

  2. Try Balzac 'le Pierre Goriot'....I seem to remember from A level there was lots of poverty and misery in that.

  3. Victor Hugo may be one that you find interesting. Perhaps you'd like his Les Miserables.

  4. Emile Zola, a founder and advocate of Realism in literature, is an author who fits your brief description. See GERMINAL which addresses extreme poverty among rural mine workers in northern France during the 1860s.

  5. edith wharton = 1.age of innocence

                           2. house of mirth

                           3. ethan frome
