  1. If you know the date of their death and where they died, you can find their obituaries in the paper.  That will give you where they were born and when.

  2. Two choices for the birth and death records are:

Contact the county courthouse in which they were born or died

Contact the Vital Statistics Office for your state (go to google to find the address)

There are some sites that you can pay to get these for you like VitaCheck but my daughter is having a time getting a birth record for her new baby through them.

Don't forget the Social Security office too. You should get their Social Security Application just to have the great data on it, like birth information, including parents names.

www.familysearch.org has the Master SS Death Index and once you have their number go to www.ssa.gov and follow the instructions on getting these documents. It's $27 but every bit worth it.

  3. You will need to contact the Dept. of Vital Statistics of the state they were born in to get birth certificates.  You will need to contact the Dept. of Vital Statistics of the state they died in to get a copy of the death certificate.  To get these documents will not be free, are available only to their immediate family, and you must prove you are their child to get them.
