Looking for colleges offering degrees in psychology...?

...with animal behavior concentration.

Ideally, I need to earn my education on-line because I work a full time job and just do not have the time to go to scheduled classes. To have to leave my job would put my husband and I in quite the predicament. Regardless though, I am having a horrible time finding schools offering this. I find many Bachelor degree programs in psychology but none with animal behavior concentration or the offering to major in psychology and minor in animal behavior.

Does anyone know of any schools that would offer this type of curriculum, preferably on-line but if not then in the Manchester, NH area?

I want to ultimately be a certified companion animal counselor and from what I can see, I need a Bachelor's in psychology with animal behavior and then go on to get my Master's or Ph.D.

Thanks so much!

  3. I wanted to make sure I got you a good answer to this question.  That wasn't easy: as I'm sure you're aware, there isn't too much available that fits what you're looking for.  Still, you have some options.

I can say from experience that a Psychology BA generally isn't all about specialization/focusing interests.  Maybe, at the BA level, you'll take electives that lean more toward one subfield than another (like clinical over humanistic), but most of us just get our general Psych Bachelors and then start honing in during grad school.

With that said, in your shoes, I'd be most focused on just finding the best, most respectable college to get a BA in Psychology that would still work with my schedule.  Being a brick-and-mortar, local school with online-only capability would be the best, since online degrees from these sorts of schools are generally the most highly regarded.

Because of this, if I were you, I'd likely end up enrolling in SNHU's online Psychology BA program (http://www.snhu.edu/2239.asp has a description of this, and http://www.snhu.edu/244.asp lists a Psychology BA as a degree you can get online from them).

It's not perfect:  it's clear from browsing this college's site that  they don't specialize in animal behavior.  However, that doesn't mean that none of their online PSY faculty has expertise in animal psych.  You could email online@snhu.edu and ask them.  If not, I'd at least find out which faculty come close: I'd look for specialists in behavioral or biological psychology.

I'd get that degree and then start looking at online grad schools that focus on animal behavior.  One example is at Breyer State University, although I don't know about what kind of reputation they have in the field.  There's no point in putting an extensive list of examples here, since I am sure that there will be more and better options available online once you have the degree.
