Looking to update my camera: for a new camera that does well in all dim & dark lighting & also able to view subject in screen before taking pic. The camera I was looking @ you couldn't view until you took picture! I would also like one that does great shoots in zoom for kids concerts & such things. Any help would be great.

  1. It sounds like you were looking for a DSLR. Most DSLR's do not have live view. There are a few though. Check out the Canon Rebel XSi about $900 with an 18-55mm lens. It has live view.

Your shots will be better composed through the finder and you will have much less camera shake if you use the viewfinder. Holding your camera out in front of you is not the most stable way of taking photos.

The cameras performance in low light will depend on your ISO setting and the lens you use. The faster the lens the better it will perform in low light. A lens with an aperture like F 1.4 or F2.8 would be best but they can be expensive. Also the higher you set the ISO the more sensitive to light your sensor will be. Beware though that at high ISO's you will have more noise in your photographs.

As far as zoom lenses go I would look at a 70-200 or 70-300mm lens. These will range in price from about $300-$2,000 or so.

  2. Canon has just announced a new low price DSLR that may fit the bill, I think a 1000D.  The price should drop after a short time, however.
