Looking for external hard drive to record TV, So i dont have to pay Tivo. I want to store my kids shows on it

I do not need to pause live tv, just store shows and play them back on the tv. Does this exist? Or do i have to stick with tivo or comcast dvr and pay the fee? Can a external hard drive be fitted to a comcast DVD by way of USB port.

I think It can be possible - by using internal tv tuner on your computer. there must be a option for recording. but for this you have to use your desktop computer.
