  1. Hi

A good place to start could be the National Library's list of geneaology websites: http://www.nla.gov.au/oz/genelist.html

You can also try a general geneaology site like: http://www.australian-ancestry.com/index...

Melbourne itself has a wealth of resources, and going to places like the State Library can 'open many doors'.

Also search by keywords for state-based historical societies, archives and publications.  By 'free' sites do you mean none of their services or products cost anything? Or is the emphasis more on freedom of access to information? This can make a big difference to some search options, especially when you get to more distant relatives/ancestors in other countries.

    Happy researching!

  2. Have a look at the link posted below, it's a directory of Australian genealogy web sites, it's excellent the last time I looked at it there were 58 Australian links on there.

    http://rmhh.co.uk/australia.html

hope this helps, and I would have give the two from the first answer. as well.

  3. Cyndislist is always good for lots of links to free sites.  Have a look:

    Good luck!

  4. Your first stop should be the state library of Victoria, who have an excellent collection of genealogical resources and information. This includes such resources as cemetery and immigration records, births deaths and marriages records and electoral rolls and census information. The family history Librarians are experts in this kind of research, and will be able to get you started, and give you some guidance on how to proceed.

Another excellent resource is Ancestry (http://ancestry.com.au). You can get a free 14 day trial to get access to the entire site, but many public libraries will have a full subscription that you can use on a more long term basis, as will the state library (but it must be used in the library).

    Good luck with your research!

    Cheers,
