Question:

Looking for good scooter or moped under 50cc?

I'm getting my driver's license soon, but because I don't have money for a car or time to take the required motorcycle classes for motorcycles/scooters over 50cc, I've been looking into buying a scooter or moped under 50cc (just for summer use). I'd like to know, are there any good scooters or mopeds under 50cc in the $1000 range (used or new)? I'd like it to be able to hit at least 35 MPH, as most of the streets I'd use have those speed limits (although 30 MPH or so is still fine since I can stick to side streets and probably won't get yelled at as those streets aren't too busy).

And I've already looked on Craigslist, but I don't know if it's worth buying something like a 1980's Honda (or other popular brand) scooter for $700-$900, even if it does have low miles; it seems a bit overpriced. I've seen some knock-offs at PepBoys and the like, new, for less than $1000, but I'm not too confident in their reliability (unless somebody has experience with them).

  1. Stay away from the knock-offs if you can, I am telling you that I've seen a lot of people who cannot find parts or anyone who will work on them.  I am not sure of the depreciation but I assume that if something like a Honda Metropolitan started out at around $1,600 and since they have been available now for at least 6 years or so I am sure you can get one in your price range.  What I am saying is stick with the major manufacturers.  Honda (Metropolitan or Ruckus), Yamaha (Vino or Zumo).  The only non-Japanese I would consider trying is KYMCO.  Their dealer network is growing and they have good quality.  Think about what I said there are Honda and Yamaha dealers everywhere and they can get you parts and work on them.

  2. You'd be ay better off buying the older hondas.  Not only reliability, but where are you gonna find parts to repair a crappy scooter made in Taiwan?  Go with the name brand definately.

  3. Hi.  I have a scoot for sale...  It's a 1997 Velocifero by ItalJet.  We bought it new and it only has about 1400 miles on it.  It's Seafoam Green and Beige, and looks like an old Vespa or Lambretta.  Send me a request, and I'll send you some photos.  PeterPaley@Rock. com

I'm asking $1550. but have a bit of flexibility.  Kick start on the first or second try.  Rust on the mirror stems and could use new suede seat.  Looks great.  Goes between 30 & 40 mph.

  4. Vespa's are pretty nice.
