Question:

Looking for health insurance for my parents who were deemed 'high risk' and have been rejected several times.

My dad is self-employed, so no company insurance plan, and my mom does not work. They are both considered 'high risk' because of health problems and having to take several prescription medications. They have been rejected a few times, one was Blue Cross Blue Shield and I don't know the others. I'm very concerned for their health and want to find something to help them. My dad makes enough money to not qualify him for anything for low income families. Does anyone know about any affordable health insurance companies that accept 'high risk' people? Or insurance for the self employed? Thanks!

  1. I'm in the same boat right now because I only work part time and my company doesn't offer benefits to part time employees and my husband can't get benefits because he is a contractor.  I'm probably going to enroll in a premier plan with ASI.  The premier plan includes everything health, dental, optical, prescription, chiropractic, accident and even a free pre-paid phone with 250 minutes.  All of that is about $52 a month for two people.  You get huge discounts on medical expenses, like 40%-50% off which is better than regular health insurance.  You can visit their website at www.asihealthcare.com or call them (800)929-8344 and when they ask for a referral number, give them #243665.

Good luck! I know how hard it is to survive without health insurance because I've been doing it for almost a year!

  3. Try http://www.myinsurancequotes.net

  4. One of them might have to find a job that has health insurance. Many people have been forced to do that, giving up being able to retire or own a business because they need the medical insurance.

They can try some high deductible plans. If you choose one with a $5,000 deductible it works if you get cancer or need a heart transplant but you are on your own for office calls so it is much cheaper.

Check with your state insurance commission they may have a high risk pool, it won't be cheap but they can get coverage.

  5. hello,

if you want read something about health insurance

i just come accross this blog which may help you :-

  6. This will vary by state. Many states maintain high risk pools, where the products are expensive, but available.

Contact www.coverageforall.org. They are a non-profit dedicated to helping people in this situation.  Talk to Ernie, as he is the unit supervisor. They have info on most states.  Sometimes there are other state programs available also.

If worse comes to worse, many people end up working out hospital payments after something happens.

Beware of "discount plans" since they are not insurance, and are rarely accepted by providers.  When they are, discounts are usually less than 10%. Since hospitalizations are $10k per day, they hardly help.

I would really recommend working with a health specialty agent in your state on EXACTLY what the medical conditions are, and what the requirements of the carriers are for those conditions.
