I am thinking about getting a truck. 1998-2002. I am thinking Diesel, but I don't know anything about them.

I am looking for some info on Diesel vs Gas?

What is better and why (Chevy, Ford, or Dodge)?

What engine or engines are better?

I am really thinking about the Dodge Quad Cab with the Cummings and automatic tranny, any info on this??

Thank you for any input.

  1. The Cummings Diesel is one of the most reliable engines EVER produced. I saw one a few years ago with 600,000+ miles. The owner said he had to replace three transmissions but he never had any failure or repairs on the lower end of the engine at all.

    Holy, c**p!!

  2. The Cummins diesel is a die hard with a vengeance engine. They pull forever.  No common failures with the auto.  The Cummins is a scaled-down example of their big rig engine. They have earned their reputation.

  3. Diesel costs much more, but the engine will last longer then you will live. I think none of them are the best, Toyota surpasses them all with flying colors. But that doesn't seem to be an option for you. Look into the older Toyota Tundra's, they kicked *** then too.

  4. Too many possible opinions on this one. They all have their good points. The only one I'd stay away from is the 6 liter Powerstroke Ford, way too many problems. Hard to beat a Cummins for reliability, But a 7.3 Ford or Chev's Duramax, are also great engines. Go with what you like, you're paying for it.

  5. Cummings are good but very noisy and can get very annoying i have a duramax and its very reasonable in the noise but it also has good mileage make sure the automatic you get that the transmission is an Alison trans they specialize in heavy duty transmissions factory ones regular ones cant handle the torque as well if your doing hauling the diesel will have a lot more pulling power but diesel is all most a dollar more a gallon so if you don't need to haul heavy things get gasoline i also have a ford and a Chevy truck they are both very good and i have had a dodge too the only problem i have with dodge they have had a lot of problems with the transmissions mine went out about every 30 thousand miles i do a lot of hauling and the gas f150 and 3/4 Chevy haven't failed me yet my ford with a 4.6 I'm getting 22 mpg after mods and it can pull good too but hardly any gas will pull what a diesel can the power-stroke ford is the strongest of the diesels i would recommend the 6.6 i think ford and Chevy have the available Allison trans in both of them make sure you ask

PS forget Toyota's they don't have the strength to pull what a diesel can all they are is a glamor truck a tall guy cant even fit in them i sat in one and the center is so wide it takes all the comfort of it
