Looking for information on teaching licenses (Tennessee)?

Hey everybody!

I have been trying to find information on obtaining a teachers license in TN and haven't been having any luck.

I have a B.S. in Chemistry and and currently work for the U.S.D.A., but am interested in teaching.

Would I have to take more classes (teaching courses), or is there a skills test I can take? Any information of helpful links would be appreciated!

  1. here is the link to the licensing board:

    http://www.state.tn.us/education/lic/

more classes, tests and student teaching are the requirements for all credentials - typically you would enroll in a post-bac credentialing program - during which you'd take your tests and student teaching portion. Alternative entrances for larger districts allow you to do all the work while you teach - but you'd be doing the same requirements - just after working and on weekends.

    good luck

  2. The above link is a great place to start, but it does depend on the area of TN you are looking to teach and for what district.  A few years ago, I taught in the Memphis area, but not for Memphis City Schools.  I taught for Shelby County.  Same county.  Different school districts.  If you were looking for a job with Shelby County without a license you chances would be about slim to none, but if you went with Memphis City Schools your chances were really good.  I have heard of people teaching for Memphis City Schools for up to 5 years without being an actual certified teacher.  Of course, the deal is/was you were supposed to working on the requirements to get your license, but some weren't.

  3. Generally, yes, you would have to take teaching courses.  You should check a local college to see if they offer a program for people who already hold a bachelor's degree to get their teaching certificate.  I know the University of TN-Knoxville did at one time, not sure now.  Also, if you check private schools in the area, some don't require a teaching certificate, just a degree in the field of study.
