Mom and I are travelling to Mexico in March and she's taking a Cooking Class with the Cruise Ship. (It will be an off-shore excursion)

She's cooking with raw vegetables and she wants to know what to do to avoid getting any Hepetitis Sickness? (Besides taking the vaccines as they are too expensive)

And we called Mexico, they said the water down there is just as clean as the water in Canada, but then some people say not to drink the water.

We're visiting Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta.

  1. All the vegetables and fuits you will eat raw must be desinfected, to do that at the stores (Wall-Mart and similars) sell small packages specially to do that, those are iodine or chlorine, the instrucions to use it are in the label. That is what we do in México, with the tap water. It is safe, believe it or not, only we don't drink it directly, only use bottled water. In many places in México the water is too "hard" (it has too much mineral, and can cause some problems). The bottled water has been cleaned from bacteria and from excesive minerals.

  2. We mexicans dont use 2 drink tap water unless it is filtered, but any water tht they give u in restaurants is safe 2 drink including the ice

abt the vegetables tell ur mom theres no prb, ive lived in mex all my life and ive never get hepetitis, wht we do in mex is 2 clean the vegetables with a didinfecting solution (water+Microdin)

but believe me touristic industry is always  so caring abt giving tourists safe food (if u get sick ull never come back, u understand?)

    enjoy mexican food :P

  3. Cant say about the vegetables but i would not drink the water in mexico only from sealed bottles.

  4. I have been to Mexico many times in the past and never got T-D while there. I was in Durango in a small town and drank a lot of water. I am going to Mexico City in the next couple of weeks and will not be drinking water from there. You are somewhat safe if you boil your drinking water. Beware when ordering drinks with ice. Use your best judgment.

  5. The water is safe but has things in it that your body isnt used to, so dont drink the water. Also, I knew someone that got sick from eating salad. Salads are rinsed in the Mexican tap water, so dont order salad. If your mother is cooking with raw vegatables, iwould recommend boiling the water or buying jugs of distilled water to wash the veggies.

  6. i was there for a year and i can tell you that except for a few places up north, it's really not a good idea to drink tap water!!

i got the hepatitis shots before i went there, but i never drank tap water anyway. i just used it to clean my teeth and wash dishes and stuff.

i would really recommend getting the shots, though. does your insurance not cover it? here in switzerland they do.

otherwise i would just recommend being careful, especially with raw vegetables (salad, for example) or unpeeled fruit.

but have fun! mexico is simply gorgeous!!

  7. IN MEXICO WE DRINK BOTTLED WATER JUST AS IN THE USA, TO COOK RAW VEGGIES, YOU JUST HAVE TO WASH THEM AS YOU DO AT HOME, DRINKING THE WATER IS A BIT OFF, YOU GET SICK CAUSE OF THE SPICY FOOD, SO DONT E AFRAID, AND YOU DONT VACCINES, JUST THE ONES YOU IS FINE.

  8. .The tour operator has a responsibility to the cooking class group. If Hep has turned up, you would be informed. In Mexico we wash veggies in purified water which is widely available. Note, you run the risk of Hepatitis aboard ship too as you would in fast food or upscale restaurants, make sure everybody is washing their hands. Have a good time, it sounds like fun..
