Looking for internet 3D interactive game engines?

Question

We have a project for a 3D interactive game with animated avatars and "world" environment.

What are the current, most sophisticated internet game engines? (not looking for anything free, but quality!)

Ideally, similar to secondlife (proprietary), but if possible, without need for user's download.

Any idea or reference welcome.

Lots of good information there.  But nothing that really helped me make a solid decision with my project, alas (I chose Ogre in the end).

If it's a web game you want, you might be fine with something like JMonkeyEngine for Java.
