I am a near 50 year old and use my glasses for distance mainly. My last exam showed OD -0.75 and OS -1.25. i were progressive lenses and would like to know if I could were contacts? I wore them during college, but was wondering if anyone had specific info with my vision if them would work for me now. Also, how have they improved over the past 20-30 years? Back then, it was a pain to keep up with them. Please only serious answers. Thank you.

  1. You have several options available now...wearing distance correction contacts , and using reading glasses on top...

Bifocal contacts...that work for some very well...about 60% of those who tough it out can adapt. But there is a compromise of either good distance, or good near vision...rarely both can be achieved.

Or another way is mono vision...one eye corrected for distance, and one for near , with contacts.

Mono vision has it's own drawbacks, such as loss of depth perception at night especially...but for many, it works very well for normal daytime use.

You should discuss those options with your Doc, and have a trial pair fitted....as mono vision, and/or bifocals

Either bifocal contacts or mono vision can take a couple of weeks to adapt to...so be ready to have lots of patience.

Many can adapt, but some never do...but it's worth a try.

  2. My prescription is -0.75 and -5.00 and I wear contacts so I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to based solely on the power. I wear extended wear contacts, so I put them in and leave them in for 30 days, and sleep in them. This works better for me than taking them out every day, I had real issues with stuff in my eyes that way. I get dry eyes, so I have drops to put in morning and night when sleeping and I have fairly minimal problems.
