In Melbourne the OLD MONEY areas are TOORAK and BRIGHTON.  Just out of melbourne there is Mt MACEDON and PORTSEA.

The inner city suburbs arte quite posh and expensive) NORTH FITZROY has a range of older renovated houses to up market new yuppie appartments

Most of the middle to upperclass suburbs have nice parks, private schools, it's just which flavour you prefer :-)

1. Kew

    - within 4km of Melbourne CBD

    - nice mansions houses ranging from AU$850000-$3million

    - Nice park (Studley park)

  

2. Brighton (where the rich and famous live)

    - within 14-16km South East of Melbourne CBD

    - Beach lifestyle

    - Houses ranging from $1million - $5million

3. Toorak (where the rich and famous live)

   - within 8km east of Melbourne CBD

   - Close to Chapel St the famous shopping strip

   - Mansions ranging from $1.3million to $8million (sometimes more)

4. Surrey Hills

    - approx 18km east of Melbourne CBD

    - Houses ranging from $950000-$3million

5. Cantebury

    - approx 18km east of Melbourne CBD

    - Houses ranging from $950000-$3 million

Occassionally middle class people buying houses in the following suburbs for its own reasons

6. Williamstown

   - approx 10km west of Melbourne CBD

   - Close to Williamston beach therefore houses with the few can cost $1million - $2.5 million (it's a lot more affordable for middle class to live here and get the waterfront rather than in Brighton)

7. Port Melbourne (only the waterfront mansions)

   - approx 6km of Melbourne CBD

   - similar to Willaimstown for middle/upperclass to get a slice of waterfront living

8. North Balwyn

   - approx 9km east of Melbourne CBD

   - Housing costs $850000 - $1.5/2 million

   - The pushing factor for house prices around this area is due to its good private schools (you have to live in the suburb to go to the school) as well as the size of land you can get

9. Ivanhone

   - approx 9km north of Melbourne

   - Similar school factor, houses ranging from $800000-$1.3million
