Question:

Looking for moral support?

I homeschool my 9 year old with autism. She only struggles with math. WE ARE DOING MATH! I don't regret homeschooling, cause they were pushing her through grades and she wasn't learning anything. Now she is progressing great with the one on one I give her, but it is SO frustrating when we do math. I'm on the verge of tears everytime. Not looking for judgement or what to do different. We are doing what works for her and what her therapists say to do. Just words of encouragement.

  1. That is a very tough thing to do, and I admire you a lot. It's good that you are being so supportive of your child, and are willing to help her out instead of just letting go through the motions in school.

    best of luck.

  2. Hang in there mom. You're doing a great job. It's also great that you are homeschooling her on your own. It's very good to know that you can give her all the attention that she needs. Don't worry and just be patient.

  3. Well you know deep down that you're doing what's best for her.  Just take it one day at a time.

  4. You are offically my hero today.  Here are two virtual hugs, one for you and one for your daughter.  You totally rock.

  5. My son is autistic and does great in math but struggles with reading/language arts.  He is particularly weak in reasoning skills and guessing what will come next in a story (there's a word for that but my mind is blank right now).  The reading teacher is working with him now at school.  He is HFA probably like your daughter.

I am sure your daughter has her own strengths.  Can you somehow bring out what her strength is in teaching the math?  Does that make sense?  Good luck to you!

  6. I applaud you for attempting homeschooling period! I don't have enough patience with my children to attempt it and they don't have any types of diabilities. Keep doing what you are doing and keep your chin up! You are doing an awesome job!

  7. How fortunate she is that she has a mother who cares and realizes the need to and can teach her one-on-one!  And a father who can care for the financial end of it well enough that you can stay home and give her the necessary attention!  And all of you are to live in a time when genuine progress can be made!

I always needed to visualize math in order to really understand it.  And basic programming, too.  Anything you can do to do the math in visual style seems to me might help.  Except for that one idea, it's all yours--you're the expert, I'm not!

    Best regards,

    Mike

  8. That has to be hard! Best wishes. Stay strong mom, the two of you can do it together.
