Do you know anything about the life and supposed subsequent haunting of a lady named Mary McCray, or Mary Maclaren?? I am not sure I have the name quite right, but as I was told, she had a lot of tragedy in her life, and now in death is seen walking the streets carrying a lantern??

  1. Mary McCray is also called Mary the Wanderer because her ghost is seen all over the island. When she was 14 she and her family left Scotland for Savannah, GA. Her family died of smallpox and she was taken in by a young couple in Savannah. After living with them for 2 years, a wealthy plantation owner, Captain Raymond Demere, brought her to his plantation on Saint Simons and made her his ward. The Captain's son, Raymond Jr., fell in love with her. On the day that Raymond asked his father if he could wed Mary there was a huge hurricane coming. When his father would not give him permission, Raymond Jr. boarded his rowboat with the intention of rowing to the mainland. Mary begged him not to go because of the hurricane but he assured her that he would be back by nightfall. He never returned. When Mary found his wrecked boat against the rocks she threw herself into the water and drowned. Ever since, people see Mary's ghost searching for her lost lover. She wears a long white dress and sometimes carries a lantern or rides a white horse. In the 1950s the airport had to temporarily shut down when a pilot refused to land because he said he saw a woman with long hair riding a white horse down the runway.  About 8 years ago a woman was taking pictures from the top of a lighthouse and captured the reflection of a woman holding a lantern in the water. This picture used to hang in the Saint Simons Inn before it was sold.

Edit: This guy started the tour then had to sell it when he moved. He gave me the info. He moved back and now runs a different tour on Saint Simons. (It made me remove the link in order to answer - some sort of malfunction)
