  1. As you go in to the track through the turnstiles, there is always a seller of the Daily Racing Form, as well as tip sheets.

Since 1895, The Daily Racing Form has been the "newspaper" of today's Thoroughbred. In that "newspaper" you can base your selection on the horse you think will win. It will teach you about a horse's pedigree. It will teach you about the track you are attending. Everything you want to know, The Form will provide you. Now the Past Performances, Workout Schedules, etc. are statistics provided by Equibase. The tip sheets are put together by the clockers. Each race track has them. The clockers go out at "o" dark thirty everyday to watch the horses being worked out.

Look at the condition of the horses as they parade out to the track for the race. See what kind of bandages they are wearing. Is the track's surface wet or muddy? They might be wearing mud caulks. How do their coats appear? Are they glossy and well cared for?

With all the information at your disposal, it's possible to make a qualified decision on who to bet on. But betting is not fool-proof. You might have a heavy favorite that is feeling off that day. Horses feel emotions as all living things do, and as such, they can have bad days or days where they are getting sick. Realize that your best guess still might not pick the winner.

I love the race track. The sights, sounds, and smells are like no other place on earth.

It's not unusual for a Thoroughbred to work out around 4:00 or 5:00AM. If a horse is a great one, a trainer might send a horse out extra early before the clockers arrive.
