  1. It is the responsibility of the passenger to arrange all necessary visas or other requirements for travel.  These can include proof of onward travel, proof of financial sufficiency for the duration of the visit, lodging reservations, friend/family or other sponsorship while visiting, etc.

The airline is obligated to check that passengers meet the requirements for one-way ticket travel, or else they can refuse boarding.  They, and you, face fine(s) for not enforcing this.  And if a passenger does get boarded, could also face deportation and ban from re-entry.

Summary of requirements is here: http://www.delta.com/planning_reservatio...

  2. AFAIK the only legal way to enter the USA with a one way ticket is to get a visa valid for more than 1 year. This is possible for some students.

Airlines will not issue return tickets dated more than 1 year from the outbound flight.

If you were refused entry the fault is yours for not obtaining the correct visa. I doubt you can blame the airline. Their responsibility ends when they get you (and your baggage) to your destination.
