Im going to be representing my city at a state pageant, and an issue Im very serious about is the environment. I was wondering if anyone knew an organization(s) that I may list as my platform...prefer one that actually has scheduled events and such. Please list any websites you may have?

  1. I don't want to make this sound like an "environmental marketing" answer Mandi, but I'd suggest that you find organizations that have strong community roots, chances for proactive participation and are visible on a national (or even global) level as well.

The first four links below have strong community programs and work on a national level, but aren't always "grabbing" headlines across the country.  They all do outstanding work and should be promoted more for what they've managed to achieve community-to-community.

The last two operate on a national level and do outstanding work on numerous fronts.  They have strong name recognition and the Nature Conservancy actually works with three of the first groups I mentioned.

I'd stress that the power of what can be done on a community level, can influence what we hope to achieve nationally in protecting, promoting and saving the environment.

    Hope this helps.  Good luck!

  3. Contact you state wildlife agency.  They should be able to help w/ finding this info.  Since the pagent is on a local level, it would be better to start w/ showing support behind a local organization.  Try contacting any collages in your immeadite area, too.

  4. American Society of Mammalogists (http://www.mammalsociety.org/)

    National Audobon Society (http://www.audubon.org/)

P.S. I am a Wild Mustang activist, if you want to help just e-mail me for info at savemustangs@yahoo.com!!!!!

  7. Try searching for a local/state-wide Native Plant Society, Native Plant Restoration Group, or a Wildlife Refuge.  Perhaps making it 'local' will bring it closer to home for the panel and crowd.  Also, The Nature Conservancy offers programs in each state.

  8. Green Peace

    Sierra Club

    National Wildlife Federation

  9. A wonderful website for enviromental activity is peta2.com

  10. The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is my top pick among wildlife conservation organizations. They work with local communities, businesses, and individuals to protect over 100 million acres of land around the world. In doing so, they preserve the wildlife communities and diversity on those lands. It's a wholistic approach, one that I feel is vital to the health of our planet. Stats: 79.5% of expenses go to conservation projects, 20.5% go to admininstration & fundraising (Source: 'Charity Navigator').

    2) World Wildlife Fund

The World Wildlife Fund is also among my top picks since their work is aimed at protecting biodiversity around the world. The WWF also works with multilateral and bilateral agencies to promote sustainable development in the world's poorest countries (Source: WWF website) Stats: 79.7% of expenses go to conservation projects, 29.3% go to administration & fundraising (Source: 'Charity Navigator').

    3) Natural Resources Defense Council

The Natural Resources Defense Council is a superb complement to any portfolio of conservation organization memberships. The NRDC's initiatives include their BioGems project aimed at saving endangered wild places, their Break the Chain initiative to reduce dependence on oil, and their Green Squad youth education program. Stats: 80.9% of expenses go to conservation projects, 19.1% go to administration & fundraising (Source: 'Charity Navigator').

    4) The Sierra Club

Shoulder to shoulder with the Natural Resources Defense Council is the Sierra Club. I especially like their Take Action Network which provides detailed information about environmental issues and enables people to get involved and advocate better environmental policy. Stats: 88.8% of expenses go to conservation projects, 11.2% go to administration & fundraising (Source: 'Charity Navigator').

    5) International Crane Foundation

The International Crane Foundation works around the globe to protect cranes and the habitats on which they depend. Although they focus on cranes, their work is valuable on a wider scale, giving insights into endangered species management, wetland ecology, habitat restoration, and the critical need for international cooperation (Source: ICF website). Stats: 90.6 of expenses go to conservation projects, 9.4% go to administration & fundraising (Source: 'Charity Navigator').

    6) Friends of Haleakala National Park

The Friends of Haleakela National Park is a personal favorite of mine because they support 'educational, cultural, research, and service activities relating to the Haleakala National Park and its ecosystems' (Source: FHNP website). This stunning park, located on Maui's Haleakala volcano, is home to more threatened and endangered species than any other national park in the United States. Among the park's endangered species is the Hawaiian state bird, the Nene. Stats: Sorry, no stats available.

    7) Royal Society for the Protection of Birds

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds is a supurb charity in the UK that works 'to secure a healthy environment for birds and wildlife, helping to create a better world for us all' (Source: RSPB website). Each year, the RSPB conducts the Big Garden Birdwatch survey, which is a great way for people in the UK to participate in a nation-wide bird count. Stats: Sorry, no stats available.

    8) The Ocean Conservancy

I like to contribute to an organization focused on protecting our world's oceans and The Ocean Conservancy enables me to do so while offering ways of taking action and getting involved. Stats: 78.6 of expenses go to conservation projects, 21.4% go to administration & fundraising (Source: 'Charity Navigator
