I am looking for information on John McKaig who got married in 1787 to Martha Craig (born 1768 York, SC). Marth died in 1809. I would like to know who John's parents were and when they came to the United States.

My ggggrandfather is William McKaig born (1795) died (1870 in Logansport, IN). William married Elizabeth Westfall (born 1798 in MD) Oct 1824 in Miami County, OH. They moved to Cass County, IN during the 1840's.

My gggrandfather John Fletcher McKaig aka JF was born in Carlisle, OH in 1833. He married Elizabeth Francis Danks (born 1844) on Dec 1861.

These bits are from a forum-type page at the site above and there are the following mentions of JOHN MCKAIG:

Becky McKaig - Sep '06--Mentions John McKaig of (1765-1841); We have understood that there was a large McKaig family in Scotland that moved at least in part to Ireland and then on to America after the potato famine in 1845. We think that the families in America come from brothers of the same family.

I'm the GG-Grandaughter of William McKaig, Silas's brother. I have quite a bit of research on John and am currently in the process of trying to find John's father. The furthest I've gotten on John is that he was in the tax records in 1794 in KY. From there they went to OH in 1803 where he died in 1841. In fact I'm headed for KY in April to do further research. I just received information on all the Mckaig's in the Civil War which included Jefferson.

    Mary Whitsell - Nov 05

My grandmother, Betty McKaig, was the daughter of Jefferson McKaig, from Missouri. Jefferson McKaig was the son of Silas McKaig, and Silas was the son of John McKaig. All I know about John McKaig was that he had an amazing number of children (over a dozen) and lived in Ohio.

Jefferson McKaig, my great-grandfather, was a volatile, fiery character, a lay preacher who liked his whisky. At the age of 16 he entered the Union Army and was critically injured at the Battle of Prairie Grove Arkansas. My father told me that his party piece was being lifted up off the ground by his thick red hair; he was proud of his thick hair and tough scalp. He had many brothers (two of whom died in the Civil War) and one of whom was a hangman in Fort Madison who, I am told, weighed 350 lbs.

Anyone with any information whatsoever on John McKaig, born 1765, married to Martha Craig, born 1769 -- I would be most obliged to hear from you.

McKaig, Benjamin served as a Private in Capt. Robert Mcclelland's Company ;Greene County, Ohio from August 22, until September 22, 1812, and from May 25, until November 24, 1813 in The War Of 1812.

Corp. James McKaig; & **Private John McKaig served in Capt. William Stephenson's Company from October 24, until December 22, 1812, and from Sept. 20, 1813, until March 20, 1814 from Greene County, Ohio  in The War Of 1812.

(**possibly John Craig Mckaig--son of John & Margaret; 1788 to 1861; and their son James Craig)

Could this possibly be John's parents?? The timeline is right considering 20 years per generation (if right, his grandparents are also listed):

    Name:  Patrick McCag McKaig

    Birth:  1742 - Ireland

Death:  1784-06-15 (15 Jun 1784) - Little Britain, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA

Parents:  Donald McKaig, Laura J Edemann

    Spouse:  Margaret

Do you know if the family lived in PA at all??
