I am unsure how to understand magnifications on binoculars. There was a 50x30 or 10x25 -- which is better, which would you recommend?

  2. The most common magnifications range from 7-12. More is not necessarily better, though. The higher the magnification power of your binoculars, the more noticeable the shaking of your hands becomes. For most uses, 8x is a good magnification to choose. If you go over 10x, you should consider getting a tripod.

Second, you'll need to choose the objective diameter for your binoculars. All other things being equal, the larger the objective diameter, the brighter the image you see through the binoculars. For most uses, look for a objective diameter that is five times the magnification power. So if you have a pair of binoculars with 8x magnification, they should have an objective diameter of 40.

  3. meade is a very good brand and durable i wouldnt get him anything to expensive i would recommend meade u can get some of the ok ones for 50 to 75 $ the best range from the 100s to the 200s ive used the more expensive i could see a good half a mile the cheapers allow for maybe 100 to 300 yards..hope ure son enjoys them

  4. some binoculars can be very pricey..and it depends what your son plans on using them for

  5. the most common binoculars are 8x40 or there abouts.  When the magnification is higher the binoculars are subject to shake and are very hard to hold steady.  A 5 year old is just a tad young for binoculars perhaps so you might not want to spend too much on them.  Also since he is kind of small, you should consider a lighter weight pair 8x40 would be perhaps too heavy for him.  Consider maybe an 8x20 pair, much lighter.  There are a couple of things that you need to know about binoculars. One is that they have a diopter adjustment for one eye so that both eyes will be in focus at the same time.  This adjustment on the less expensive pairs is not locking and tends to get out of adjustment easily.  The 2nd is that besides a diopter adjustment there is also a focus adjustment so you will need to train your son on how to adjust both.

Here is a link to a couple of pairs that should prove satisfactory.  You might even want a pair for yourself so you and your son can go bird watching together.  Note:  if you are like me and wear glasses these will not do.  The eye relief is not sufficient.
