  1. Try go ahead tours I have read good things about this company and their Italy tours. Have booked them for a Spain tour. Check tripadvisor.com's forums, they have posting from people that have taken their tours. Also try AARP they sponsor trips through various companies.

  2. Perillo has been booking tours through Italy for decades. I have been to Italy but not with a tour group, but I have friiends who used Perillo and were extremely satisified with almost every aspect of the tour. The link to their website is below:

  3. Trafalgar Tours - great  hotels and civilized departure times - regular guide plus specialized local guides - a little more expensive than some of the others but you get what you pay for

  4. Tours can be great as long as you have an idea of your expectations of the trip and they match. Be very upfront with the agent, and ask them if they have taken the particular tour you are interested in. I used to be a tour guide, and this issue arose quite often.... therefore I will give you some options.

My Mom is older and I have designed a 2 week tour for her that was less hurried than group tours. I have used a combination of tours giving us time to just relax and be serindipitous. For example, in Rome I booked an audio tour. You are given an mp3 player with 2 headsets and we will have it for 3 days/ $14,95 USD. Ths way if we are up to it, we can walk to the colosseum and do a tour, if we want more we can move on. If not we can go to our hotel near the Spanish Steps and rest or eat good food. I also prebooked a 3 hour Vatican Tour. I am working on the Florence portion. I have booked tickets for the Uffizi and Academy galleries.

We are also staying in Tuscany. There will be plenty of down time mixed with food and wine time too.  If you are willing to do some leg work, Rick Steves has excellent guide books and videos. Also, ask your friends.

May your trip fulfill your dreams....

  5. My grandmother regularly uses AAA for her overseas trips. They have really good deals. I believe you can get the brochures free by going to an office or calling them up.

  6. I would highly recomend Rick Steves tours. They are small and personal. You aren't going to stay in all 4-star hotels, but the accomidations are decent, and have a very authenic feeling. Also the tours span a wide age range. TO really see the areas (and not just the inside of a tour bus) I recomend Rick Steves.

By the way: Italy is a beautiful country! I'm sure you will LOVE it! :) Happy Travels!
