i'm in school to get my masters in psychology and counseling, and i'd like to go on to be my license after i finish with school. i'd like to work with adolescent girls and young women who struggle with eating disorders, abuse, and/or self-mutilation and addictions. i'm a planner (haha), and i want to hopefully move to canada, california, chicago, or just anywhere where this is some city life, and i wondered if anyone might have any insight on what kind of salary i'd be looking at? i'm just curious.

  2. Counseling those in crisis is highly rewarding work. I run a domestic violence program, and I love my work.

The salary can vary widely depending on the city, the size of the organization, and what kind of work you're passionate about. If you choose to work for a nonprofit you will probably have a smaller salary that if you work at a private clinic or office. However, much of the work directly dealing with the issues you are interested in is done in nonprofit settings.

Larger cities tend to provide higher salaries, but you're also looking at a higher cost of living. Canadian salaries will vary as well, depending on which province or city you are in.

Even though you will have a graduate degree you will not necessarily have extensive experience, so you might be looking at a salary in the $30k-$40k range. As you gain more experience and move into supervisory/administrative roles your salary usually increases.

If you have not done any direct work in the fields you are considering, I would strongly suggest you begin to volunteer or look for internships before you graduate. It is not the right work for everyone, and we need the right people to make a difference. You will also build a better resume with more hands on experience.
