Looking for some good Comics?

my girlfriend has just started getting into comics (weird eh?) well, I want to help share her interest by collecting with her but what she reads (the grimm fairy tales) doesn't interest me as much.

What I am looking is for a good serious that is kinda darkish, psychological thriller, or at least where the "hero" is kinda ambiguous, as in you can't really see a clear definition of right or wrong.

I looked at the DC comics JLA series, seems kinda cool. someone was talking about one called "tower of babel" which seemed cool,

any ideas and opinions would be wonderful

  1. do you like anime?

well theres this anime called "death note" its really good and you can call it a phycological thriller. look it up on wikipedia. im tellin you right now it is really worth the time to either watch it or read it! btw it has exactly what you would like in a character...one who is neither right nor wrong.

  2. youll probably like these.....

Marvel - The Punisher Max,  Ghost Rider

DC- All- Star Batman and Robin, Batman, Detective Comics and try these batman paperbacks Batman:Year One, The Long Halloween, and Dark Victory

and also Spawn from Image Comics and The Goon from Dark Horse Comics...oh ya and check out The Preacher

those are all pretty much dark psychological thrillers, and real good ones too

  3. Why, oh why do people insist on answering questions clearly about Western comics with manga suggestions? Death Note isn't at all what you should read. If I'd suggest any Manga, it would be Battle Royale.

Dancingbudha, I'd definitely say Tower of Babel is a good read for you. Thrasher also mentioned The Punisher, which is just about perfect for what you're looking for. Start with MAX volume 1.

Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns are also great choices. The Killing Joke examines the relationship between Batman and the Joker and what separates them. DKR is about an aged Batman who snaps and comes out of retirement

Watchmen has been getting a lot of hype lately with the movie coming out next year, and again is perfect for you. It's a very in depth adult examination and deconstruction of super heroes

Superman: Red Son is an amazing little read. It's an alternate reality where instead of Kansas, Superman's rocket landed in the Soviet Union and he is raised as a communist

Moving away from Super heroes, I would recommend a crime comic called 100 Bullets. It's about a mysterious man named Agent Graves who goes around and finds people who have been wrong. He gives them a picture of the person who screwed up their life, irrevocable proof that they were responsible, a gun, and 100 rounds of untraceable ammunition. and then he tells them they have carte blanche - if they choose to act on the information he has given them, no law enforcement agency in the world will be able to touch them. And then he walks away. He doesn't tell them to take revenge, but he gives them every thing they need to, and leaves the choice up to them. Along the way, more of the conspiracy behind Agent Graves is revealed: who is he? Who does he work for? Why does he do this? How can he do this?

  4. If you have access to a comics shop, you might want to look for back issues of a DC book from the late eighties and early nineties titled "Suicide Squad." It is perhaps one of the most morally ambiguous series ever produced, and reads like a blend of the Justice League with the "Dirty Dozen" movie. The "heroes" are criminals drafted by a secret government agency to undertake covert tasks that are illegal under international law, and things seldom go as planned. It was a great series and I miss it. There was a short lived series with the same title in the late nineties which had none of the good features of the first series, so don't mistakenly buy any copies of it.

  5. Marshal Law , he retires 'heroes' from active service .

    :0)

  6. You could try Grimjack

    Grendel

    Vilonet Messiahs

    Shadow Mage

    Judge Dread

    Turok: dinosaur hunter

    Badger

    Haywire

although most of these will be ard to find, they are worth the read, and satisfies your request. Enjoy!
