  1. Look in the Horse and Hound for a working pupil position.  Make sure stables are approved by ABRS and or BHS.  They will train you to instructor level and beyond.

Or you could go private at these places if you are able to afford them.

Type in Riding Training Centres into your search box and you will come up with hundreds.

  2. if you live in aus have a look in horse deals magazine, it shows some jobs in there

or have a look in the newspaper, local stable, and maybe try your local race track.

GOOD LUCK - i would also like a career in horses

  3. Welcome to the wonderful world of horses!!

Until you find your hands-on experience, read up on horses and the various breeds and/or disciplines so see where your interest is.  Read books, magazines..explore the internet.

You say you've been around horses for 6 months..is it at the type of place that you can become a "barn brat" (I think I'm still a barn brat..never get enough!!) and hang around..offer to help...DOING ANYTHING..it might be at the bottom of the totem pole mucking stalls or other various jobs but watch, listen and learn and ask questions.  Eventually you'll gain experience to help out doing other duties.

As far as the leg work....that is up to you to do.  Do your own searches on the internet...we don't know if you live in the US or UK...so it is difficult for us to tell you exactly where to go.  But I would say if your 17 and able to relocate, you should be able to figure out where to look...being on your own isn't as easy as you might think it is.  Working around horses isn't either, it takes alot of sweat and dedication..but it is alot of fun.

Good luck with your new found love!!  I hope you find what your looking for!!

  4. Go to your local vets office and ask if they know anyone. Ask if they do find one if they could give them your #. Post adds up saying your looking for some one to teach you. Get riding lessons. You will learn SOOO much. Below I've listed some horse sights to teach you more about the horse and training tips to keep you busy while looking for someone.

  5. what part of the world do you live in? what city / suburb? if we know where you are we'll be able to give you more relevant answers :)

  6. I would suggest looking in your local newspaper for jobs to work around horses.  Also check with various stables in your area.  A local feed and/or tack store is another good source.

  7. You can see if a job matches your experience, this website has a lot of horse care jobs, with varying amounts of experience needed:

  8. William Woods University has horse camps and a bunch of other fun stuff to do in the summers. You may want to be hired as a barn hand and that will definatly teach you the correct tequnicks you'll need to know.

    I'm glad you love horses!!!

  9. I don't know what area you are in .... but most trainers need grooms ... and muckers .... take some lessons and then offer your help ... know that every little girl we meet wants to ride ... we have all worked our way up from muckers .... when someone shows good working skills and works without complaining we like to keep them near and you become grooms ... then start cooling out .... and then riding .... it takes time and a trust ..... don't give up ... study ... listen ... ask questions ... don't bug and so a real interest ..... it will all pay off!

And always have water and sunscreen with you ......

Edit:  Hudson .... could not live with out our "barn brats" .... 2 of my own children our "barn brats" ... just not for their mom!  I like that name ... I just call them "trouble" .... lovingly!

  10. If you find someone who owns there own personal horses they will teach you anything. thats what I did for a great while and I took care of stallions and geldings. But I already knew how to take care of horses at that point I just did it because I had to sell the horse I was leasing due to she was too arthritic for my training I was doing. I say find someone like this because they train you a few days with there horses and then they trust you alone with there horses taking them in and out of the paddocks and to the pasture or stalls. you clean the stalls, feed the horses and then you can also ride by yourself in time with there horses and then you learn to clean the tack and so much more you wouldnt get to do at a regular job wth horses or barn. This is because there is no one else who works for them but there own family but really this woman just went through a divorce and was going to sell her horses she said if I never showed up. So this might be the best way for you. Also she trained me to barrel race better and jump better, so if you can find someone like this you are golden! Dont feel shy either to ask them and explain what your looking for with strangers who own horses, if they are as horse crazy as you they will help you find a place or hire you to let you get what you want and then still look around for a better place for you! so good luck and if you have anymore questions feel free to email me I would love to help out a fellow horse lover!

  11. Ok well I have been riding for 4 years and still dont know everyhting. I coukd teach you just the info I know and it would take me 5 years! How I am learning and how I have learned is 1 lesson a week and I volenteer everday over the summer at summer camps. I LEARN A BUNCH! In my free time I read horse books. Me and a few friends are researching almost every dieses to make a book. We want to be vets when we are older so ya. VOLENTEER AND RESEARCH ON YOUR OWN TIME!

  12. try a local riding school or horse sanctuary. i learnt loads when i was helping out at the riding school, and you make loads of new friends who will always help you out!
