I have lived there an am interested in comparing notes with others who have been there.No B.S.

Had to go when the gvt. and EZLN were "negotiating" in Feb. 1994, a month after the EZLN erupted there. I think under other circumstances it might have been charmng. I found all the military on the road from Tuxtla Gutiérrez and in San Cristóbal a bit terrifying. Also it is very cold in the winter in a country where they don't believe in central heating. Except for the tourism and  the military presence when I was there I would say it is pretty much like any town of similar size in Mexico.
