My grandfather used to recite a poem when I was young, and I think he called it, "The Bestest Friend I Ever Knew." He'd recite it with an Irish lilt to his voice, and the narrator of the poem was talking about being "down and out" but how his friend was there for him, the bestest friend he ever knew, and at the end, the poem makes it clear he's talking about his dog. My grandmother thought it might be TS Eliot, but I'm not able to find anything. Sadly, my grandfather is no longer with us, so I'm not able to ask him. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

  1. POLYPHILOPROGENITIVE

The sapient sutlers of the Lord

    Drift across the window-panes.

In the beginning was the Word.

In the beginning was the Word.

    Superfetation of ,

And at the mensual turn of time

    Produced enervate Origen.

A painter of the Umbrian school

    Designed upon a gesso ground

The nimbus of the Baptized God.

The wilderness is cracked and browned

But through the water pale and thin

    Still shine the unoffending feet

And there above the painter set

    The Father and the Paraclete.

        .    .    .    .    .

    The sable presbyters approach

    The avenue of penitence;

The young are red and pustular

    Clutching piaculative pence.

    Under the penitential gates

    Sustained by staring Seraphim

Where the souls of the devout

    Burn invisible and dim.

Along the garden-wall the bees         25 ith hairy bellies pass between

    The staminate and pistilate,

    Blest office of the epicene.

Sweeney shifts from ham to ham

Stirring the water in his bath.

The masters of the subtle schools

    Are controversial, polymath.

As you know, this poem is from Eliot.

I looked for the one your grandfather used to recite to you, bur I did not find.I'm from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. I'll try to find it with an English teacher I know. If I do so, I'll let you know.

    Keep your light bright!
