Looking for the right dog for us, and need some assistance?

Me and my friend recently moved out and got a cat, but just miss having a dog as we both had one.

We both have uni 3 days a week, usually like 6hrs a day-ish?

&We both work 9 - 5pm the other two days.

We don't work home saturday & sunday, and we do go out at night often, on weekends and weekdays.

We are clearly looking for a small dog so we can take him/her down to the cafe to meet friends for lunch.

We can groom fairly often, &walk up top 5 days a week, thats definate.

We do have a small backyard, and because we are 19 &students &working, it needs to be okay when left alone and should get along with our cat! And not destroy the house/yard.

We cant stand barking but dont mind if we have to train it heavily to get that out of it, as long as it isn't a spastic barker!

We are looking at having a few breeds/mixes/dogs,

which do you think would suit us?

Pomeranian x Shih tzu

Cavalier King Charles

Cavalier x Poodle

Mini Poodle

Cocker Spaniel [< but they are a little larger? &kind of spaz often?]

Any other suggestions are welcome! We haven't thought of many so far.

Thanks a bunch! ♥

  1. wells .. i really like poms . they're cuute & easy to handle .

but another dog would be a yorkie although they are a little hyper ;P

    hope it helps . :)

  2. we are as you say s****. because we actually care about animal welfare and are responsible pet owners.

all dogs can bark, all can tear stuff up, and none should be left alone for long periods of time. dogs are not disposable. if you have already put restrictions on getting a dog. then you shouldnt get one period! dogs take work, all do. and bred does not always determine temperment or 'ease of use'. it us up to the owner to be leader and keep the dog fullfilled 100%. if you cant put 100% into a dog, then do us all a favor. dont get one..because you'll probably end up giving it back or abandoning it.

  3. OMG Get a cavie!! I'm getting one in mid september! They are So CUTE!!!!

You MUST get one, they are the best dogs I have ever seen..

  4. Honestly, none... You both had the right idea getting a cat as they are independent. Dogs are not. It looks as though neither of you has the time to devote to training a puppy as you are both in school and work. A dog needs one consistent (alpha) trainer. Also, a puppy should not be left alone for more than 3 hours a day as their poor little bladders can't handle it. They also should not be left alone inside or outside to roam free. Dogs are denning animals and need to be kenneled during the times they are alone. Otherwise they can get Hyper Isolation Anxiety... this is when they start to destroy things.

You are both young and are enjoying your college years. Don't saddle yourselves with a puppy as it wouldn't be fair to you or the dog. They are similar to having a baby for the first 2 years. Do you really want that responsibility?

I wanted a puppy badly when I was your age and out on my own for the first time. I am very thankful that I had a cat first because it wasn't until I owned a dog myself 3 years later that I realized how much work they are. Plus, I taught my cat how to fetch so he was like a little dog. Especially when he was panting from running so much =)

  5. Go to the shelter and adopt a dog.

  6. I've never had any of those breeds, so I don't know much about them, sorry. But I would strongly suggest taking a breed-selector quiz. They ask you a lot of questions about what you want from your dog, then they give you a list of breeds you would be most compatible with. I found them extremely helpful when choosing which kind of puppy to get. I'll give you the link to my favorite one : http://www.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IAMS_... This one is incredibly thourough, and I think they ask all of the questions that you mentioned. Good Luck!

  7. HI JUST READ UR DILEMA, IM A ROTTIE OWNER AND HAVE HAD DOBERMANS, COLLIES, GERMAN SHEPARDS, FOR STARTERS YOUR BEST ''NOT'' GETTING A PUP AS ITS A REALLY BAD IDEA LEAVING A PUP FOR AS LONG AS YOUR BOTH OUT, AND IF YOU GET A RESCUE DOG YOUR GIVING AN UNWANTED DOG A WELL DESERVED HOME, BUT IF I WERE YOU I WOULD GO FOR SOMETHING LIKE EITHER A GREAT DANE, A GREYHOUND SOMETHING LARGE LIKE THAT AS NEITHER OF THEM BREEDS NEED MUCH EXCERSISE I KNOW YOU MIGHT BE THINKING WELL GREYHOUNDS RACE BUT I KNOW QUITE A FEW PEOPLE WHO HAVE OWNED BOTH BREEDS AND THEY BOTH SAID THE SAME THING, MIND YOU HAVING SAID THAT MY ROTTIES IS THE LAZYEST LITTLE TOAD OUT THERE AND I HAVE TO LITERALLY DRAG HIM OUTTA THE HOUSE IVE NEVER KNOWN A DOG AS LAZY AS HIM OR THAT DOESNT LIKE GOING ON WALKS AND I LIVE RIGHT BY THE BEACH TOO LOL BUT WHAT EVER DOG YOU GET WILL NEED ALOT OF ATTENTION HOPE THIS HAS HELPED

  8. lol i didnt read it all but golden retreiver or husky

  9. chihuahuas.pomeranians or maltese but i think chihuahuas are the best people say they are yappy but they arne't all yappy at all i own a chihuahua and shes calm ONLY barks at people that she hasn't seen before!~

    good luck :D

  10. dont buy a mix almost all of them are made(not born) by backyard breeders, if you can get the ekc(im in the us but its still a good book) it has that kind of stuff http://www.petfinder.com/dog-breeds click on a breed to see ....."statistics" (dont know a word)

  11. I will suggest a Bichon Frise, but only if you will be able to provide it with at least a couple of hours of human attention daily. That's for the dog's sake, not yours necessarily, although as a house dog you will discover it to be the most loving, personable breed...you and your friends at the cafe will easily fall in love with one and it will return it greatly.

  12. I think a mini poodle would be cute, but it might take a lot of time and work.

Cats don't take much trouble at all, they are very easy to look after; they practically look after themselves!

  13. i know someone who has a miniature teacup yorkshire terrier that loves her cat and is very small and if you want to see a picture go to google and type in yorkshire terrier

  14. schnoodle! they are cute and get along with almost everyone! and get a mini one, they need less excersise. they bareley shed, but need to be brushed and sometimes trimmed.
