I have rented a car and have heard that you can snorkle and other excursions without using companies like 'altournative' or 'alltours'. When I was there last month I saw signs nailed to trees that read 'cenote'. Has any one ever been to one of the places or other ones like it?

  1. Xcaret- Tulum-Cenotes are undergroun cave systems, I would rather have someone who is familar with the territory.

  2. At Xcaret you can float down an underground river. The admission to Xcaret is not cheap, but there are lots of other things to do there--so you can make a day of it.  Click the link below to read about other cenotes.

  3. I used to work as a tour guide here.

I posted in our website some tours you should do by yourself.

Just check the subpages from: Tours, Tips and Trips

  4. Yes, there is a stretch of highway where there are lots of cenotes on the west side of the road.  I'd recommend El Jardin del Eden, or Cenote Azul.  In general, snorkeling is better in the ocean, in terms of flora and fauna, but some cenotes are interesting for their stalactites and stalagmites, and other underwater formations  I would think better snorkeling would be found in Gran Cenote, on the Coba road, as opposed to the two previous ones.  Those first two are fantastic for the scenery, the cliff-jumping, and just relaxing in cool, clear, beautiful water.

Do you plan to see ruins?  Tulum and Coba ruins are easily accessible by car.  Tulum town is a great place to explore (be sure to pick up some chicken and potatoes at Pollo Bronco).  The Tulum beach (a little drive from town) is one of (if not the) most beautiful beaches in the world.

I highly recommend you check out www.playa.info for the best in-depth information on their forums, both from locals and frequent visitors.

  5. The cenotes are an underground cave system that run all over the Yucatan.  Many of them are filled with water making an excellent snorkel or diving destination. I have done both and I would recommend diving because snorkeling got kind of tiresome.  But the best place I have been to was a cenote that had collapsed making a 15-30 foot cliff jumping opportunity into a lagoon type hole.  It was an awesome experience.
