Looking for title name of children's book?

I read this book back in 1984 about a boy or main character becoming friends with an animal that was glued, stapled, nailed together like Frankenstein but this was pieces of zebra, horse, pig, cow, etc...sounds disgusting- I know but it was real cute book. Anyone know the name or where I can go to find the title of the book? Thank you.
