What is the best lens to go with a EOS Rebel XSi? I want long range with great picture quality. I also want to be able to take wide shots, are there any lens that have both? What are the price ranges to go along with?

  1. The top quality Canon lenses are the "L" series lenses, they range in prices from $600 - $12,000.  The least expensive of the "L" lenses is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L at $600.

The lens with the widest range in the Canon lenses is

    Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5L ($2300)

Canon just announced a new lens the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, this lens will be out soon and is priced at about $700.

    Hope this helps

  2. Have you looked at Canons website?  All their lenses are listed there.

    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro...

For wide shots, the best lens is the 10-22 mm zoom lens.  The best zoom for what you call "long range" is something like the 100-400 mm.

As you will notice, there is no single lens that can do this.  Actually there never was and probably never will.  The closest is something like the Nikon 18-200 mm VR lens, but so far Canon do not make a lens like that.  None are inexpensive.  You may want to look first at Canon USA's website and then when you choose your favorite lens(es) and then look for them on B&H Photo for what they cost.

The best lenses for Canons are those made by Canon.

  3. Canon has just announced a 18-200mm lens. That'll cover from wide-angle to telephoto but the 11x zoom means there'll probably be sacrifices in image quality.

Unless you really want the convenience of the 18-200mm you're probably better off buying two separate lenses.

What's your budget? If you have lots of money the best image quality will come from the 'L' series lenses. A great telephoto would be something like the 100-400mm L but it'll cost you $1300. It will also weigh a ton. A more realistic purchase would be something like the 70-300mm which will cost you around $500.

As for wide shots, if you have the 18-55mm kit lens that'll do it fine. If you want REALLY wide shots you'll need to get something like Canon's 10-22mm lens. I think it costs somewhere around $600 (but I could be wrong).
