Hello - I live in Brisbane (I lied on my profile).  I also have worked for a number of radio and TV stations and worked in A&R for a while.

The best way to get a job in music retail is to get a resume that highlights;

*interest in customer service; customer must always be made to feel as though they are welcome and must be served as quickly as possible

*cash handling ability - or demonstrate ability to learn.  If you do not have any cash handling ability get hold of a float (that is the same amount of money they would use in the till) around $200 broken into all the denominations of money - and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE making sales.  Even if you sit in your bedroom and PRETEND you have just rung up a sale for such and such an amount.  The retail outlet you work for will teach you cashing in and out.

*Demonstrate how you would find out about 'unusual' music - what would you do if you were asked to find Dean Martin's biggest Christmas hits - working in music retail is not all about the latest modern music and music you know - it often encompasses MANY AGE GROUPS AND TASTES.

*Push to prospective employers that with the increase of music downloads and people buying online you are more than willing to provide the personalised, customer focused service that brings customers back.  You want to help the customers, help the boss increase sales, and maintain an ever diminhising customer base.

*APPLY DIRECT - pick the stores you want to work for - go in and check the places out, NOTICE what type of stock, NOTICE what type of customers go in there - NOTICE how the staff deal with customers.

The jobs are there - it is up to you to show you WANT it and CAN DO IT.
