Question:

Looking into buying a moped?

I'm looking into buying a moped/motorized scooter and I found one that I like. But I'm a first time buyer and am totally clueless about whether this would be a good buy or not. Here's the stats I got from the owner, anyone more familiar with buying mopeds know if this is a good deal?

It's about 4 years old, I don't know the make/model. 2 cycle, auto oil injector, auto 2 speed trans, electric start, it's never been damaged and is currently priced at $600.

This all sounds like gibberish to me, so any help or explanation would be immensely appreciated!

  1. always make sure its a honda. nothing else.

and you probably don't want a 2 cycle engine, because mixing of gas and oil is needed.

buy a 4 stroke honda, like an old honda spree, or a ruckus

  2. It's a very small one suitable for driving in the suburbs or small city only.    Basically these are motorized bikes so useful for any area you'd normally see a brave bike rider go on the road that is and not on sidewalks.   For small jaunts this sounds reasonable to me.    Don't think it's a motorcycle though and don't fall into the mistake it's only a bike.   It's in between the two.    Start slow,  drive it around the neighborhood,  in parking lots etc. until you feel completely comfortable with it.   To the store, to school, etc. they can save you a lot of money.   In a year or so you can sell it for almost what you paid for it ( if you don't wreck it that is)

They save tons of gas money.  You can go 60 plus miles on a gallon of gas.  Just remember to keep the oil tank full.   No oil and the engine will seize up on you and then you've got an expensive yard ornament.

Some have pedals they say you can pedal in an emergency like running out of gas.   Don't believe that.   They are very hard to pedal.  At best they can be used to start the engine if the battery goes bad.

On the battery itself ask the person when it was replaced.  After 4 years it should be needing a new battery.   Sears sells them cheap but make te seller replace it first if it's original.

    Good luck and drive safely
