Looking to build a computer. Will all these parts be compatible?

Hi all,

I'm building a custom computer for the first time. By no means am I an expert, but I am not completely clueless either. However, I do seem to be a little unsure on a few of the components that I think should work together. I'll post what I'm thinking of putting together and I'm wondering if anybody could give some advice on whether it's all compatible and practical.

I am thinking of starting off with a barebones kit and then adding some of the components that I'll buy off the internet.

Barebones kit: http://www.geeks.com/details.a.....MSI-H62-K2

motherboard: MSI P6N SLI Platinum nForce 650i SLI Socket 775 ATX Motherboard

gfx card: GeForce 7300GT 128 MB PCI Express

Things I plan to purchase on the internet:

2x 2GB ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/.....6820237022

core 2 duo processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/.....6819115052

I also have a 120GB hard-drive that is used on another computer at the moment and I plan to move that into this custom computer as the sole drive.

hard-drive: http://computers.pricegrabber......oduct_tab/

As for an operating system, that's something I'm not sure about. I have xp on two computers and vista on one and am wondering if one would be better to have than the other. I'm mainly looking to play video games with this machine and also looking to upgrade it over time and, for instance, add more ram (max is 8GB) or upgrade the video card.

I'm quite new in the sense that I've never put everything together before like this and am not totally sure if all of this would be compatible. All criticism and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  1. If you go to www.crucial.com you can check if the ram you're buying is compatible with the motherboard.I don't know if you can check anything else, because I only use it for that purpose, but it certainly does it for ram and motherboards. Hope that helps. Take care!

  2. It all sounds good, if you are planning to upgrade in the future and keep playing video games then go with vista. I mean, at some point, even if people dont want it to, things are going to stop being made to work in an excellent way with XP and they will go to Vista and the new project coming up. So I would go with Vista since I really dont find anything wrong with it after SP1

  3. building a computer is a fun experience. all the parts should work. use windows xp as an OS. vista has less compatabilities. good luck!!!

  4. go to Tom's Hardware forum You will get a lot better info and more techs hang there than here

You can tell them what you plan to use it for and how much you can spend and they will give you a build with links to where to get the parts for a great price

The only other spot to get good prices is to check out computer shows

    http://www.marketproshows.com/computersh...

check out for your area the schedule and see if anything is near you

They have great prices at these.

Or get a bare bones kit at New Egg or tiger direct and than just upgrade the power supply and add the other needed things and be done with it at TD they will help you pick the other parts needed when you call to place order.

I would go to Toms forum first though to get a idea

  5. Should be a good system.  I recently built one with the 7300GT, and am very pleased with it for the price.  Good luck, and hope your first build experience turns out well!

  6. since you are asking here, i can honestly say that you have no business building a computer.

if you knew what you were doing, you would call those companies and ask them to reference their techpapers/whitepapers

  7. The main part is to make sure that your motherboard will be compatible with the hardware that you are going to ad to it.  The computer software if you have a problem you can always look for patches online.
