  1. JY15 may be a good choice.  I recommend buying a boat that is actively raced in your area. For the following reasons.:

You can get a test ride & plenty of advice on all the facets of ownership of the boat in question. You can go out & race against other boats & rocket into being a great sailor rather than a mediocre one. Join a local fleet & skipper &/or crew to gain experience and all the help you may need regarding boat ownership., like tuning , repair etc.

  2. Try a Wayfarer Dinghy. They are very forgiving, stable, solid and easy to handle. If you only want 15ft, then this would be the one.

  3. You can't go wrong with a sunfish.  They're fun, cheap, and easy to maintain.

If you want something with a little more sail and a little more room for friends, try a Hobie Catamaran.  (I know this might not be what you're looking for, but they're a lot of fun).  The new ones are very lightweight and the hulls are made out of durable rotomolded plastic instead of fiberglass.  I've gotten ours on one hull multiple times and have even flipped it in heavy winds.  They're pretty easy to flip back over with the righting line and the float on the top of the mast, which prevents them from "turtling."
