I am looking to buy board games tomorrow for a potential for a girlfriend and I. We are both very competitive, love beating each other, love everything from sports to movies to history to drawing to talking to concentrating and everything in-between.

I know I want to get Cranium, Scattegories, and Pictionary....what else should I get?

  1. Monopoly!

  2. Apples to apples the adult version, life, sorry,

  3. gooooood old fashion twister.

  4. Not Cranium.  It's a great game, but you really need at least 4 people to play it.  I remember Life being a lot of fun.  Classics like Sorry and Parcheesi shouldn't be ignored either.

  5. Darwin's Game Closet is the largest single source for vintage games this side of ebay.  We have started a listing of games designed for two players only.  This may help you make some decisions too.

  6. Many of the games you have listed are for groups of people and wouldn't be as good for just two people. Games that my girlfriend and I like to play are:

    Mastermind

    Stratego

Ticket to Ride: Switzerland (Requires full version of Ticket to Ride)

    Upwords

There are many more, but this will give you a start

  7. The games you mentioned are all great for parties, but they wouldn't work very well for 2 players because you need a partner on your team to guess the answers to the clues you are giving.

Here's a list of great 2 player strategy games:

    Lost Cities

    Ingenious

    Blue Moon City

    Yinsh

    Can't Stop

    Carcassonne

    Kahuna

    Ticket To Ride

You'll have to go to a specialty game store to find these, but they are definitely worth the extra effort to track them down. These games are all great introductions to the world of modern board games, and you will find them challenging, but easy to learn. Have fun!

  8. Trivial Pursuit

  9. 2 Player Pictionary?!

    I recommend Hive.

  10. Cranium isn't fun with only 2 people because you need teams.  Cribbage, Blockus, Chinese Checkers, Chess.
