Looking to buy some good board games?

Question

I want to buy a few games, that are fun and competitive at the same time. I need some ideas though. I LOVE monopoly, but sometimes just dont feel like playing it. Games that 2 people can play would probably be the best, because my girlfriend and I play them mostly together.

Me and my boyfriend have jenga, Pictionary and scategories. We invite our friends over for game night and have a blast. We also have family feud and jeopardy for PlayStation 2 and those are alot of fun to play just the two of us.

One of my favorites at the current moment is Scattergories. Not necessarily a board game but it's very fun. It can be played by only 2 people but a larger group would be better. You have a many-sided dice that determines the letter you would play with and in an alloted time, you would have to come up with words that start with that letter that fit the category on your card. It's a lot more fun than I'm probably making it sound but I guarantee that it's a game you should definitely check out.

Although not really 2-player, the Newlywed game is pretty fun to play with different couples too. Since you like to play different games with your girlfriend, this would be a great game for you guys to be playing on the same team.

Family Feud, Battle of the Sexes, Loaded Questions, Apples to Apples (a big fave for me), Risk and Catch Phrase are some other games that are good for groups.

Since you're looking for more 2-player games, the only thing I can think of are the classics such as Sorry!, The Game of Life, Stretego and Scrabble. Maybe even Jenga (although not really a board game either. My boyfriend and I used to like to play Scrabble a lot too but after a while, it loses its touch. Plus, he was tired of me beating him. :)

SORRY! (You get me, I'll get you back!), Boggle (3 minutes to find as many 3 letter words you can), Scrabble (use letter tiles to create words and build off each other), Battleship, Taboo (4 or more players, I believe, but SUPER fun!) and those are all that are coming from my head now as board games.

You can also play Skip-Bo and Uno or a good old fashioned game of Rummy!  (all card games but still fun).

Also, why not take your girlfriend and go shopping for board games.  This way you both can browse the aisle together and have a say in the purchase.  Sounds romantic to me!

I can understand why you don't always want to play monopoly it can get long so here are some of my favs. Defiantly buy Apples to Apples because it is competitive yet light hearted but its for 3 people :(. Battle ship! Deff competive and fun! Life is also really fun and sweet. Candy Land if you want to go young.  Have fun and any game store will have a great selection!

I always liked the game Sorry. You could also learn backgammon which is a good game for two people.

I enjoy word games. Things like Scrabble, Boggle, and Upwords. They are fun and can be quick.

I like to play Risk, especially some of the newer "themed" versions. The newer versions have rules that allow you to set up a third "neutral" army when you have just two players. Of course, it can take so long to set up the game that you run out of time to play!
