  1. I'm truly amazed that you have been thinking about this for a year and the only two places on your list are the Philippines and Costa Rica where the official language is Spanish and not English.I can think of,and have been to, at least 10 countries, with beaches, where the official language is English. If you would spend a year of your time learning Spanish you will be able to talk to 350 million more people in 20 other countries. Many of them with beautiful, inexpensive beaches.Safe is a realitive term.Your definition of safe and mine are probably very different.

    Good luck in your quest.

  2. When I retired out of Camp Pendleton, I moved my family to the panhandle of Florida.  We purchased 10 acres and put up a 4 bedroom, 2 bath house for just under $150K (8 years ago).  Land has gone up from $4K an acre to about $20K -- dependent upon the exact location.  There's a 5 acre lot just down the road from me (now zoned commercial) and their asking $1,000,100...

I live in the woods.  My nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.  Call it "Elbow Room."
