  1. A live-in job in a hotel is always a good starting point for getting to know an area. The wages and conditions are pretty basic but there's the benefit of being able to move on to another area very easily, as you are not tied to a contract on a house.

I did things that way when moving to the Shetland Islands from England, and am now well settled with a job I enjoy. In Shetland the cost of fuel, food etc is higher than average, but the cost of housing is very low if you don't live in the main town.

http://www.anyworkanywhere.com is a good starting point for hotel (and other) jobs.

You could also try http://www.helpx.net/ - a site that puts you in touch with people who will provide you with free bed and board for a few hours work in their homes/farms etc a day.
