I want to try sushi but I don't know what to order?! Are there any with cooked fish or vegetables or just some milder tasting ones that a first timer could try?

  1. California roll is a great starter sushi.  It is made with good quality "crab stick" (surimi) made from cooked and flavored fish.  It also has avacado, cucumber, plus enough exotic flavors from the seaweed to give you a good intro to sushi. [some california roll is made with real cooked crab, but it's traditionally done with surimi]

You can also try rolls or individual sushi made with shrimp.  The shrimp is always cooked.

  2. Correction...all sushi is NOT raw fish.  The word sushi just means that you are eating something served on top of or rolled in rice.

If you want to try a cooked sushi, some of the more common ones are the crab (it's boiled before it's made into sushi), eel (barbecued with a teriyaki sauce), shrimp (boiled or steamed - but not the sweet shrimp which is very small and raw), there is a cooked egg omelet sushi which tastes like a sweet omelet.

Salmon skin sushi is cooked but I don't know how.

Futomaki usually has cooked crab and a variety of vegetables rolled into it, but check wit the waiter first...some restaurants may serve a different version.  This is usually also a very large sushi that is very difficult to eat with chopsticks.  It is perfectly acceptable and very common in Japan to eat sushi with your fingers.

California roll has cooked crab and avocado as well as other vegetables and is a smaller roll than futomaki to it can be eaten easily with chopsticks.

If you go to a sushi restaurant and you don't see vegetable sushi on the menu, just ask for it.  The chef will make it for you.

The milder raw fish sushis are usually white fish, yellowtail (which is a species of tuna), and salmon.

Finally, many places have speciality sushi and the menu usually tells you exactly what's in it.

  3. Love your screen name.

I was as tentative as you when I first tried sushi. In fact, I told the group I was with that I'd only try it as long as they promised not to tell me what I was eating. I love all sushi now.

But, I'd recommend you follow the California Roll suggestion - that's a pretty safe way to introduce yourself to the sushi experience. The deep fried tempura is another way to go.

    You'll be fine.

    Bon apetit!

  4. Okay for those of you who dont know, sushi refers to the rice, not the raw fish, though raw fish is a very important part of sushi.  Something over rice (nigiri) or maki (rolls), is sushi.  Though, if you want to consider yourself a true sushi eater, I would open yourself to trying anything.  I would go with salmon, RAW salmon, not smoked (I don't know who decided that putting lox on rice was a good idea... someone in poor taste, obviously), personally, because, depending of course on where you go, of course, salmon is just buttery, creamy, orgasmic goodness.

  5. Not all of it is raw fish. If your kinda turned off by the thought of eating raw fish, try the California Rolls, they are pretty good and the fish is cooked. Later.

  6. I swore I had a site of mostly photos

  7. Salutations,

shushi actually pertains to the vinegrated rice and nori it is served with but, yes, much of it is Raw. California rolls are usually what I have Newby's try first as the crab in it is usally cooked and chilled. I love yellow tail(tuna) and of course salmon, but just study the offerings, usually it is all done in english and even if they are busy the sushi-san will answer questions. sweet potato roll is a treat, as is Oshinko which are pickled veggies. tomako is an egg custard that is worth trying. just go and have fun and if you know someone who likes it already all the better. Cheers

  8. Every first timer for sushi loves the salmon at first for some reason (well in my experience). My favorite is the tuna. And sushi is supposed to be raw fish with rice. You might want to start out with rolls if you would prefer cooked fish. Once you are expericenced with sushi (haha), you could try sashimi and, my favorite thing on earth, Chirashi!!!

  9. shashimi is straight raw fish w/ nothing at all, if you think you can do this then go for the gold!! lol

    if you're kind of scared

    then do the rolls

there are a lot w/ all sorts of stuff in it and just a sliver of  fish

try las vegas rolls, tempura style

or anything temperura which is batter dip and fried

most people play it safe w/ california rolls but i personally don't think they are so great

    but shishi IS raw fish

  10. They have cooked tuna sushi rolls, also smoked salmon and avocado, or a lot of places have terriyaki chicken or beef, or prawn tempura rolls.

Seriously though, the raw ones are delicious, just make sure you go somewhere where everything is nice and fresh, and you'll never look back.

  11. ummmmmmm but i kno

  12. Generally, anything with Eel will usually be cooked, or shrimp. You can also order a california roll, which is just avocado, imitation crab, and cucumber rolled with rice and seaweed. Most places also offer cucumber rolls. Or even try some of the place's food offerings, like teriyaki, or noodles.
