Question:

Loophole in airport security?

I flew over the weekend with my family on vacation. While dining at a restaurant near our gate before the plane took off...an interesting topic of discussion came up. Surely the airport security does a great job of detecting weapons nowadays, but don't they use knives in the kitchens of these airport restaurants? Or is the food shipped pre-cut? What if a crazy employee gave the knife to a passenger? Just one of my crazy thoughts.

  1. No, they don't have knives in the "kitchens".  All the meals are pre-packaged.  They just have to be heated and served.

  2. well, there is airport security, local police and other employees.

I dont think the food is pre-cut, but i dont think that has a chance of happening. There are other sane employees around and the passenger could be sane too.

  3. Well, don't you have to go through security just before boarding the plane?  I can't seem to remember now!

  4. It really all depends on what type of resturant you are at.  There are some that have pre-cooked food that they juat have to warm up.

Other restaurants that have food that has to be cut; in most cases their actual kitchen is located some where else in the airport that is outside of the security checkpoints.  Such as somewhere on a lower level, basement, back room, etc.  which means they are allowed to have the knives in the kitchen because they are not beyond security.

Once all the meat or whatever type of food has been cut, it is properly packaged and a porter transports the food from the kitchen to the restaurant.

The only other conclusion would be that the knives were screened and allowed through security due to them being pieces of equipment needed for that section of the airport.

Anyone traveling is not allowed to possess any type of weapon due to the fact of securing air-ways.  Though there are several workers within the airport that need to carry pocket knives to assist in their daily job duties.  These workers are exempt and are allowed to carry a pocket knife with them.  With this in mind, remember I said pocket knife, it has to meet a certain size requirement.  These folks are not boarding a plane; so this does not effect travel in any means.
