I got a quote for $239 to get my loose wheel bearing fixed. Is that a good price? Is it possible to do it myself?

  1. Do it yourself its not as hard as garages try to make out GO ON have a go!

  2. It is not impossible to do it yourself but I advise you to get it done by a Qualified Auto Mechanic. Most probably, you might have to get the Wheel Bearing replaced to due to increased wear and tear caused by friction.

RULE # 1 - Alway, shop around !! Ask for quotes and make sure if  the Mech will be replacing your wheel bearing or just tightening it up.

If he is replacing it, buy the part yourself and ask only for the labour charge.

If he is not, then $239 is too high a quote you got.

  3. which bearing your talking about, the front or back. the back 1 is alot easier to change and you can do it yourself, but of course you can do the front 1 too yourself, but it takes a little more work.

  4. That sounds pretty high since it's just "loose"  But who knows what other damage it caused.

Usually  wheel bearing is simple to do if you have proper jacks, stands and tools.

Take off the wheel, the disc brakes, and it's right there...  You do have front wheel drive more than likely, so that might be an issue.  I suggest looking up the howto on google, and then decide if you are mechanical enough to do it.

The parts are cheap.  Like $10 for a wheel bearing itself.  Although you will need to pack it with grease also.

$239 does sound high for just removing a tire and brakes, putting in a bearing and that's it.  Unless there are more parts that were damaged, or the front wheel drive system costs time.  I'd call around, and ask how much it costs to get the same work done on your make and model at another shop.

Then again, you want to make sure it's done right.  Riding around with a loose or improperly placed wheel bearing is very dangerous to you and others around.  =/

Bottom line, get it fixed before it causes more damage.

EDIT:  whoa!  how did I get a thumbs down?  It is easy to fix.. I listed the normal part price, and how to do it!  Google your car, see if it's easy.  Call around, get other prices, then decide if it is worth your time...  Simple, done.  I've worked on cars for many years, I now changed over to computers.  A wheel bearing is easy.  Although it's a greasy job.
