"The Hobbit" preceded the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy in the books. In it, Bilbo Baggins goes on an adventure with some dwarfs, and he finds the Ring of Power in a cave. He meets Gollum and has a riddle contest with him. I have read in several sources that a movie of "The Hobbit" is being made and is scheduled to be in theaters next summer.
