Loren Roberts wins the Toshiba Classic
The Champions Tour player, Loren Roberts, won the title of the Toshiba Classic on March 18, at the Newport Beach Country Club in California.
He scored an 8-under 205 in the three-day tournament and finished on the top of the leaderboard, with a two-stroke lead over the three runner-ups.
The 56-year-old American professional golf player was tremendous throughout the event. His scores in the three rounds were 66, 70 and 69.
"We did make it interesting," Roberts said. "We got off to the start you dream of doing, but hit a snag on the back".
In the first round he scored six birdies and finished by carding only one bogey. Then on March 17, he added three more birdies and two bogeys on the leaderboard.
His third-round performance was inconsistent. He displayed three amazing birdies on the opening four holes and bogeyed the 7th.
After three consecutive pars from the 8th to 10th, he scored two more birdies on the 11th and 13th hole.
He was impressive till the 13th hole, but lost focus and recoded three devastating bogeys from the 14th to the 17th hole.
After such a mediocre performance, his victory was at risk. However, he improved his swing and shot a 5-foot birdie on the final 18th hole.
Roberts missed a potential chance of scoring under-par on the 12th hole. His ball dropped on the green after two strokes. He was close to recording a birdie, but finished the hole at par.
"I kind of let everybody in the game," Roberts said. "I got out of rhythm. I didn't hit bad putts. The only bad putt I hit was on 12".
Mark Calcavecchia, Tom Kite and Bernhard Langer tied for the second position by scoring a 6-under 207.
They were only two strokes behind the leader and competed well at the Newport Beach Country Club.
Langer and Roberts were standing tied at the leading position till the final round’s 17th hole, but Langer made a double-bogey on the 17th and finished on the second.
"I didn't think I hit that bad a putt," Langer said. "Actually when I hit the putt I thought it was pretty good. It was accelerating instead of slowing down. Once it got 3 yards past the hole there was no stopping it. The pin is pretty brutal".
Roberts won the handsome amount of $262,500, whereas Calcavecchia, Kite and Langer earned $128,041 each.
Now all the four professionals are looking at the next Champions Tour event, where they can meet and compete against each other again.
