Lorena Ochoa Invitational: Candie Kung ties for fourth in second round
Candie Kung of Chinese Taipei, who shared the first-round lead at Lorena Ochoa Invitational with two contenders, marred her position in the second round after she carded three bogeys to crash
down to a tie for the fourth position on the leaderboard.
Kung started brightly at the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament as she shot a 66 in the opening round to seize an early lead along with American Angela Stanford and Michelle
Wie.
However, she could not stand her ground in the second round and lost her hard-earned position after posting a 71—although she opened the day with two back-to-back birdies.
After she sank two straight birdies on the first and second round, spectators at Guadalajara Country Club, Mexico, got behind her with full support and expected her to keep it up by shooting
birdies.
But the young gun faltered after she missed a par-putt on the 5th, which sent the ball rolling past the cup. It was her first bogey, but she switched to a jittery mode after that
as managed to avoid a bogey on the par-3 6th.
On the 7th hole, she once again misjudged the putt and ended up registering her second bogey.
On the back nine, Kung tried to get back into contention by shooting birdies on the 10th and 13th, but another bogey on the 16th hampered her from moving ahead.
Despite what she did on the second day, Kung’s first-round performance has helped her remain in the top five.
Speaking to the LPGA Tour at the end of the opening round on Thursday, Kung said that her confidence spiralled after she got into contention with stars like Wie and Stanford.
She said her strokes were perfect, which helped her card seven birdies.
“It was a pretty consistent day today made a few putts, hit some shots really close had a couple of tap ins. Overall it was just a perfect day out there for scoring,” said Kung who is expected
to atone for her lapses in the third round.
Speaking of the course, Kung said that she has always liked to play at Guadalajara Country Club, as the course is good for short game.
“The greens were running nicely because I was the first group everything just went well”.
