Lorena Ochoa Invitational: Cristie Kerr rises to third position in second round
American Cristie Kerr posted a 69 in the second round of Lorena Ochoa Invitational to take the third position on the leaderboard.
Kerr, who is one of the veterans in the roster of the four-round event, began her first round in a grand style at Guadalajara Country Club, Mexico, as she carded a 67, but the score was not
big enough to carry her through to the top.
However, the second round brought the American star plenty of surprises and she exhibited a much better game by making balanced strokes on most of the holes.
Kerr parred the first hole and launched a birdie on the second hole. She then parred the remaining holes on the front nine to post a 35.
On the back nine, her performance remained strong as she carded three birdies and one bogey.
Kerr sent the crowd cheering after she made a seemingly difficult par-putt on the par-4 11th hole. After parring the next two holes, she sank another birdie to further cement her
position.
However, on the difficult par-3 17th, the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) star could not judge her putt and ended up registering a bogey.
She quickly regained her momentum and scrambled to shoot her fourth birdie to remain in contention.
Commentators said that Kerr’s performance has improved greatly, thanks largely to good swing skills.
Sharing her thoughts at the end of the round on Friday, Kerr said that she was glad that she remained in contention, but what really helped her post a better score was perfect swing.
“My swing was almost perfect yesterday and anything less today would have been less. I played really well today, managed the game really well but didn’t hit it quite as pure,” said the 35-year-old
who has grabbed 14 LPGA titles since she turned professional in 1996.
“It kind of felt a little, I don’t know if it was a little tired, but it felt a little shaky out there today, not from a nerves standpoint but it felt different”.
She went on to say that her caddie has been a great help recently, as he has helped her fix some persistent flaws in her putting and swing. “I just have to stay relaxed and do my thing with
him out there”.
